 Short History of the City.  
Indisputable documentary  testimonies  of archeological nature prove the existence – since the VIth century- of the City of Tomis, on the headland which represents the origin of Constanta nowadays.

Tomis- host of the exiled poet Publius Ovidius Naso,was built in a vast process of Greek colonization on the sure of Pontus Euxinus, gaining the atributes of a city starting with the IVth century B.C.. The importance of Tomis grew considerably during the reign  of Constantin the Great- whose name was used for the present name of the city.

The importance of Tomis grew considerably during the reign  of Constantin the Great- whose name was used for the present name of the city.

Affected by the invasions of migrating peoples, then unde the reign of the Otoman Empire, the city was brought to ruins countless times.

A real development of the city can be brought to discution only after the Romanian victory in the Independence War (1878), when the county came back to the mother land. A second stage of the spectacular evolution process of Constanta was represented by the Interwar period , the next striking moment in its evolution being the 1989 Revolution. The spiritual life of the city is materialized by the activity of 5 theatres, 5 museums, a series of branches of scientific research societies, adding the important contribution of the 4 local newspapers : Telegraf, Observator and Cuget Liber, the TV channels TV Neptun, MTC, 57+Channel, and the monthly cultural magazine "Tomis".

Education

The education sistem in Constanta is represented by a network of over 500 schools, with organized intensive and bilingual education and for national minorities, study groups and classes were created for the study of their mother language turkish and russian.As for higher education Constanta became one of the most important cultural centers in the country, the educational offer comprising in colleges with the folllowing profile medicine,philology,history, law,theology,engineering,economic studies,agricultural science-part of the Ovidius State University,Institude of Civil Marine, Naval Academy Mircea cel Batran and other 5 private universities.

Geographical, stretching

Constanta is located in Constanta county in the south-eastern extremity of Romania on the Black Sea, with these coordinates: 440 11 `- north latitude, 280 39` - eastern longitude.  The administrative planning area is 1121.66 km2.

At the northern limit of the city stands Mamaia, beach stretching over a length of 6 km east oriented which makes sunlight all day.

Port of Constanta is Romania's main Black Sea port and the fourth most important in Europe, being spread over an area of 3182 ha (dry acvatoriu).

Population

Constanta s population exceeds 310,471 people, the majority of wich are of Romanian nationality along with turks, tartars,gypsies, russians, hungarians,armenians, greeks,germans, bulgarians,by religion there are orthodox,romann-catholics,greck-catholics,remormats, unitarians,

Local authorities

Local authorities are made of the Local Council (27 members) - as deliberative authorities and the Mayor - the executive authority.

In June 2004 Mr. Radu Stefan Pea, the Social Democratic Party candidate, was reelected Mayor of Constanta.
